Table shows every total eclipse of the sun and it's position at
maximum
Date
Time (GMT)
Type:
- Type H= hybrid I.E. Annular/Total
- Type T+ Total eclipse on the horizon
Magnitude:
For a total eclipse this figure has to be 1 or greater. Although the
sun and moon appear to be roughly the same size in the sky there apparent
sizes vary depending on where the sun and the moon are on their relative
orbits.
The best total eclipses occur when the magnitude is 1 and the moon appears
to be exactly the same size as the sun and blocks it completely but allows
prominences (solar flares) to be seen at their best.
A hybrid eclipse has a magnitude greater than 1 for part of the eclipse and
less than 1 (I.E. annular) for the remainder of the eclipse.
Latitude
Position of maximum eclipse relative to the Equator
Longitude
Position of maximum eclipse relative to Greenwich
Altitude
Height in degrees of eclipse at maximum - at 0 degrees it appears on the
horizon
Width
Size of lunar shadow on the earth at maximum in kilometers (1.6 kilometres
= 1 mile)
Maximum Time
The length of totality in minutes
