Solar eclipse at the Royal Observatory Greenwich
Eclipses and the Greenwich Royal Observatory
Greenwich Royal Observatory: The first recorded astronomical
observation of the first Astronomer Royal was John
Flamsteed's observation of a solar eclipse from his home in Derby at the age
of sixteen on 12 September 1662.
Edmond
Halley, the second Royal Astronomer at Greenwich, (and discoverer of the
great comet) popularised the great solar eclipse of 1715 which made a track
across central England.

Solar astrophysics started at the Royal Observatory with Sir
George Biddell Airy's observation
of the solar eclipse of 1842.
